Hello from Christchurch!

Hello world! I’m Kirsty, the store manager for one of our beautiful Sunglass Hut stores in the sunny city of Christchurch.

My journey to this role began when I first started selling sunglasses from my family’s surf & street wear shop. Although we only stocked a small range, the most popular sunglass brand was Oakley. Through my sales role I quickly gained an insight into the vast amount of technology & innovation that goes into manufacturing a single sunglass. There were always exciting new things to learn about the Oakley range with new designs always being released with the latest technology and it was always exciting to be able to share my knowledge & passion with our customers.

I have always been into fashion, loved keeping up to date with the latest fashion trends through magazines & being inspired by celebs on TV. An idol of mine for the past few years has been Rachel Zoe & her passion for the industry made me excited when I found out there was a job available at Sunglass Hut. SGH stocked amazing brands by world class designers such as Prada, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana just to name a few! This was the perfect way to blend my love of fashion & what I thought was an extensive knowledge of sunglasses (but boy did I have ALOT to learn!)

At the time I started at Sunglass Hut I was already half way through my Commerce degree in which I planned to major in accounting & economics. SGH was very accommodating to my uni hours and the need for intense study around exam time. Although completing my degree seemed like it was taking a lifetime I always found my focus to be on a future promotion at SGH. I saw getting my degree as a way to step into management at SGH and help with further promotions. After completing my Bachelor of Commerce degree I moved into an assistant manager position and within 3 months was promoted to store manager.

Although I no longer want to pursue a future in accounting I feel that my degree has helped in contributing to my success in my role as a store manager. Last year I was made South Island Store Manager of the Year due to the sales success of my store & this year I have been selected as a Leader of the New Dawn… more on this next time
