Apparently men are from Mars and women are from Venus? At Luxottica we don’t mind where you come from, we care about finding the best skills and people for the job. However we are extremely proud of our recent award as a 2012 EOWA Employer Of Choice for Women citation, which is the fourth consecutive year the company has achieved this accolade. Luxottica was one of only two retailers that gained the citation out of a total of 125 organisations.
The EOWA list is published each year by the federal government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA), and puts Luxottica amongst the country’s best in their commitment to creating an environment that enables and empowers female employees to pursue professional development and career goals.
As a company that employs over 3400 females, Luxottica has always championed equal opportunities and diversity. The company is continually looking at ways to support our workforce as a priority. We have brought in specific actions to bring women into leadership positions and have worked with them to champion flexible work/life balance. In fact we also have a number of males that work in a part time capacity.
We know how it is to feel motivated and engaged in the workplace and our Learning and Development team works to provide tailored programs for employees. Our goal is to create an environment which allows all employees to pursue their career goals and empowers leadership.

Soooo looks like we have come to the end of my secondment as a “blogger” for March. No more public forum for people to listen to my ramblings – did I hear a collective “sigh?’ Just on that note I might leave you with a few things.
If you work for Luxottica and are not already, do yourself a favour and get involved with OneSight and OneVision! In my humble opinion this is a great way to help others see and change peoples lives; I have always gotten far more back than what I have ever given.
Point two – if you don’t already work for Luxottica, think of it this way. I have just clocked up my 17th year and I always thought if I didn’t love what I did I would do something different. 17 years later, still here.
My final thoughts - any business business is only ever as good as the people who work in it at the time(think about it) and right now there are some pretty cool people working in our business.
Thanks everyone for listening. Dave Fahey signing off.
OPSM Toormina early March 2010… I was working away and happened to look after a man who was in desperate need of some new specs. He recently lost his glasses and needed some urgently as he was off overseas for work. I told him I would do my very best to get them to him in time but couldn’t promise this as he had a difficult prescription. We agreed that if they weren’t quite ready I could easily post them – no biggy.
Not too deterred the man happily ordered some glasses and off he went. I received the order the day he was to depart and so phoned him to let him know they were here. He had ran out of time to call in so I said I would send them….. to Papua New Guinea! Easy or so I thought.
A week passed and I received a call, no specs. Ok, not to worry I am sure there is just a small delay. Two weeks and an e-mail, “Dave where are my specs?’. Not long now I reckon. Week 3, “Dave I really need some glasses, whats happening mate?’. Me, “I definitely sent them. I’ll check it all out and get back to you”. Hmm Oz Post, “We cant track anything in Papua New Guinea”. Bummer. Alright, so off I went and ordered a new pair. Round two. Sent them off again and a week later, one happy email from my customer with his new specs. Yay!
So I filled out the lost parcel paperwork at the Post office, never heard anything more about it and forgot about it… until today. The local postie walks in and hands me a mashed and ripped post bag with a squashed glasses case and some bent up specs. Couldn’t believe it! Only took two years but I finally got them back.. Funny, funny stuff. I rang the gent (now back in OZ) and I told him what I had just received, followed by a very smart “see I told you I sent them!” We both laughed so hard. I told him he could come in and collect them no worries at all. Can’t wait to see the look on his face when he comes in.
Recently I was lucky enough to attend the launch of OneVision, an Indigenous eye health program, up on the Gold Coast. Kicking things off, I was happy to meet a great bunch of Luxottica employees that I was to be working with during the launch. Day one, we headed off to the Titans headquarters for some Cultural Awareness training and later a BBQ with some of the NRL’s former greats (partners with OneVision and guys doing some great work).
Day two and time to get ready for our primary role – vision screening in conjunction with the NRL and the Indigenous All-Stars career’s expo. Met some great kids, saw some great acts, met some great footballers and had a great time doing it! During the screening I came across a future professional BMX rider, a future cardiothoracic surgeon, as well as the future first Indigenous female prime minister. Talk about inspiration, motivation and drive – theses guys had it in spades! Also… a big shout out to the Colli Crew! What a powerful group of kids – keep it up guys! Along the way we were able to identify some kids and adults that could really do with some help when it comes to seeing the world. Off they went to the local OPSM where they received some great care and vision solutions – and all on OneVision. Nice work!
Day three and a big visit to Dream World for the girls and boys from the local schools at Mt Isa who were lucky enough to be treated to a visit to the Gold Coast as part of the festival. Again all on OneVision. The trip finished up with the big finale and all the OneVision team heading off to watch the Indigenous All Stars V NRL All Stars… exciting game and a great way to cap things off! After the game, and before my head hit the pillow, I was busy planning how I would be part of the next OneVision mission and what I could be doing better to make a difference in other peoples lives (didn’t get much sleep that night). Back to reality and now looking for my next fix. Helping other people with the support of your work is very, very cool. Thanks OPSM and Luxottica for making it all happen.
On our second clinic day, we screened high school children at Spinifex State College. I wrongly assumed this would be more challenging. I thought teenagers would be the last people to want glasses and far too cool to respond to Merrilyn’s dance moves as she pointed to the letter chart! How wrong I was; the teenagers were giggly at times but very enthusiastic about having their eyes tested and we moved through the screenings rapidly.
By 2pm it was all over – time had flown. Across the 2 days, we screened 622 students. Approximately 20% of screenings were referred to the Optometry team for further testing and approximately half of these were provided with glasses. All quite impressive in 40+ degree heat!
I’m very much looking forward to my next clinic. I have come away more knowledgeable, feeling rewarded and made some lovely friends - and all I gave up was a few days of my time.
