Hi everybody, my name is Brendan Philp and for the past 4 years I have had the pleasure of being the optometry manager for the spectacular team at OPSM Carindale in sunny Brisbane. You’ll be hearing from me over the next month as I let you into my exciting world as an optometrist.

The Greeks gave us the word “Optometry” derived from the words “optos”, meaning eye or vision, and “metria”, meaning measurement. I know what you’re thinking, “boorrring!” And in fact when people think of optometrists I’m sure they still imagine a 60 year old person in a lab coat sitting in front of a dusty box of lenses desperately trying to count to ‘3’ but can never seem to get past ‘2’. Well I’m glad to announce that this just isn’t so!

What I enjoy most about working for Luxottica is that each and every day provides many new opportunities to build great and lasting relationships. For around 30 minutes patients let me into their lives and allow me to see life’s visual challenges from their point of view. They then place their trust in me to provide them with the best possible solutions for their individual needs, whether it be glasses, contact lenses or something else all together. When I see a patient’s face light up it gives me great satisfaction as I know that I have impacted and made a real difference to their life.

Working for Luxottica has also allowed me to travel and work in many parts of our great country from Canberra to Cairns. I can’t wait to see where it will take me next! (only joking my beautiful team at Carindale!)

Talk to you all soon,

Brendan.

My name is Brian Pye,I am the manager of OPSM in Warrnambool,a country town about three hours from Melbourne. My journey through OPSM started in January 1970,that’s a short 40+years ago right here in warrnambool as a optical mechanic, the days of glass lenses and hand edging every pair of specs, three years later I have shifted to the big smoke(melbourne) to finish my apprenticeship, after four years of dispensing, and managing my first store I wanted to return to the bush(any where as long as it was out of the city)a country boy at heart,I shifted to Swan Hill, stayed there for three years and then our store in W.bool was up for grabs so home I came, with a wife and two kids to begin my next phase of my career. That is where I still am with forty years up my sleeve, how do ithank OPSM/Luxottica for the opportunities given to me ?I treat the store as my own business and look at every customer as someone I can help.Do nothing but your best.

My day starts at about 8.30,doing what you have to do to get the store ready for the day,as no two days are ever the same, you can only plan so much.having a great team with me is a bonus,Patti my optom of nine years, with twenty years experience, then there is Alison,Dianne,Katrina,Thelma, add there experience up it comes to over forty years !! So we have a lot of talent on hand.being the only male I am definitely out numbered, not that there is anything wrong with that ! next post will be about customers I dealt with.

Tomorrrow my ‘baby’ girl turns 2!

It sounds like a cliche, but truly it seems like just yesterday I was heading off on maternity leave from OPSM. This birthday celebration has given me pause to reflect on my family and my role as a working mum.

There’s no doubt about it – my family is my priority. Long before I had ever met my husband I had hoped to one day have kids. This was one fundamental reason I chose optometry as a career, as it has great potential for more flexible than average working hours during those early years of parenting. In this regard, choosing OPSM as my employer was a smart decision – the perfect match really.

I’ve worked for OPSM now for nearly 13 years. I started as a new graduate at George Street ‘Gibb and Beeman’. With such a great team and amazing customers (many of whom treat me like a member of their own families!) this store is now my second home, one that I really care and am passionate about.

I have worked at OPSM full time, part time and casual, have been on two maternity leaves and long service leave. I have varied my role and been involved in different projects. I am happy to say that the flexibility I always desired for my career/family balance has been provided for me – without sacrificing any work satisfaction or challenge.

I feel blessed to have been given my hubby and two special, delightful little daughters. And so too am I blessed to have had such understanding, compassionate and supportive managers at OPSM over the years. It really does make a difference to me as a woman trying to juggle her love for her work and her family.

Oh, PS…Happy Fathers Day to all those wonderful, hard-working dads out there!

Hi All!

Firstly I would like to start by introducing myself. My name is Lauren Chikitch and I am the Store Manager of OPSM in Campbelltown, South-West Sydney NSW. I have been with OPSM for almost 5 years now and in that time have progressed from a trainee dispenser, to assistant manager, to manager of a small store and to where I am now manager of a large store. And along my journey I have also become a qualified optical dispenser.

Throughout my time with Luxottica I have met so many amazing people and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to be a part of so many peoples live. I love knowing that no 2 days are the ame. The interactions we are able to have with so many people from different cultures, generations and walks of life is truly amazing.

So know you know a little about me, I be in touch soon with updates of whats happening. I look forward to sharing my next month with you all!

Enjoy!

I’ve worked with OPSM/Luxottica for the last fifteen years and I must say they have been rather more enjoyable than the six years beforehand where I had worked for other places. Luxottica is a big company, it’s also a big family. If you stay long enough, you get to know a lot of people, and these people are good people. A central aspect that also makes working for Luxottica an enjoyable, rewarding and fulfilling experience is the fact that the company is well lead. Being part of a progressive and growing organisation is a great feeling, and there are no plans on my part to explore different work opportunities.

Fifteen years is a reasonable time, and who knows how many tens of thousands of people I’ve helped. The cool thing about working for Luxottica are that my work experiences are nation wide. Certainly I work in metropolitan Perth, but I have great memories of other places, like Tasmania, beautiful Tasmania. I have gorgeous memories of a day off, having a quiet beer in a warm pub in Hobart, looking out on the harbour and the sailing boats all framed by an overcast sky, choppy water and Salamanca markets to my right. Or that time I worked in Canberra and walked beside those walls with the names of thousands of fallen servicemen in the War Memorial thinking how could so many people die like that. And then there was that time I was in the Pilbara, admiring her ferocious beauty, standing alone on kilometers of beach watching bright red herringbone clouds inch toward the sea/sky horizon at sunset. Got lots of other memories too.

Working for Luxottica means being busy, doing a lot of good and working with great people in great places. We see what memories will be created next year, I am looking forward to the journey and am enjoying the ride.
